Slant’d was born from a series of conversations between friends navigating big questions about identity. Bonded by shared values and a craving for community, a group of writers, artists, and activists came together to create a literary magazine that challenged the public narrative about what it means to be Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) today.
What started as a creative outlet quickly evolved into a wave of creative activism. Built from the ground up by and for AAPIs, Slant’d unapologetically became a safe space for everyday AAPIs to reclaim their stories and find a sense of belonging.
With an ethos that everyone has a story worth sharing, Slant’d became known for its radically inclusive editorial philosophy, creative co-development process, and a commitment to helping AAPIs feel seen, heard, and loved—just as they are.
Between 2017 and 2022, Slant'd published 5 issues of our literary magazine, uplifting hundreds of debut AAPI writers and artists and reaching thousands of readers nationwide. We expanded our impact beyond the page, bringing the power of inclusive storytelling directly to the masses through public events and workplace programs at companies across the United States. What began as a volunteer-run passion project blossomed into a vibrant movement to create safe and vibrant storytelling spaces for BIPOC voices.
In 2022, five years after the launch of our first literary magazine, we said goodbye to one of our original co-founders and embarked on a new adventure to redefine our purpose and rebuilt our organizational structure to be in stronger alignment with our values. Later that year, Slant’d received 501(c)(3) status and reincorporated as a literary arts nonprofit dedicated to fueling creative development within the AAPI community.
Built off our original commitment to create safe spaces for AAPIs to use art and the written word to explore their truths, our dream is for Slant’d to become the creative home for AAPIs to experience personal growth, creative expansion, and meaningful connection.
Slant'd meets a critical, unmet need facing the AAPI community. Only 7% of published authors identify as AAPI, despite being the fastest growing ethnic group in the United States. Traditional publishing systems often exclude emerging AAPIs due to barriers like agent representation, educational requirements, and industry access. This inequity has existed for decades, but the urgency has intensified in a time of rising anti-AAPI sentiment, increasing censorship attempts, and cultural erasure.
At Slant'd, we don't just publish, we're building a regenerative ecosystem for creative expansion. Our model proves that storytelling can be both a personal and collective act of reclamation. Today, Slant'd exists as a permission slip for AAPIs who have been told—explicitly or implicitly—that their stories aren't "literary" enough, "universal" enough, or "marketable" enough. When someone shows up at our door—as a writer, reader, or artist—we tell them: your story matters, your creativity is valid, and you have a place here.
At a time when AAPI voices remain marginalized in mainstream publishing, Slant'd demonstrates that radical inclusion and literary excellence are not opposing forces. In creating spaces for these voices to shine, we are expanding the very definition of who gets to call themselves "creative."
