Slant’d was born from a series of intimate conversations between friends navigating their place in the world. Bonded by shared values and a craving for community, a small but mighty group of friends came together to create a literary magazine that freely explored big questions about identity and challenged the public narrative about what it means to be Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI).
What started as a creative outlet quickly evolved into a wave of creative activism. Built from the ground up by and for AAPIs, Slant’d unapologetically became a safe space for undiscovered creatives to reclaim their stories. With an ethos that everyone has a story worth sharing, Slant’d became known for our radically inclusive editorial philosophy, creative co-development process, and a commitment to helping AAPIs feel seen, heard, and loved—just as they are.
Since our founding in 2017, we’ve empowered 150+ AAPI writers and artists to find their voice and a greater sense of belonging with the greater AAPI community. We expanded our impact beyond the page, bringing the power of inclusive storytelling directly to the masses through public events and workplace programs at companies across the United States.
In 2022, five years after the launch of our first literary magazine, we embarked on a new adventure to redefine our purpose and north star. In 2023, Slant’d received 501(c)(3) nonprofit designation and became an independent publishing house dedicated to celebrating the inherent creativity in the AAPI community.
Built off our original commitment to create safe spaces for AAPIs to use art and the written word to explore their truths, our dream is for Slant’d to become the creative home for AAPIs to experience personal growth, creative expansion, and meaningful connection.
With the publishing house at its core, Slant’d will also offer arts and culture programs that provide opportunities for AAPIs to explore their creative dreams in community, such as storytelling contests, writing fellowships, and even a creative summer camp!
